The Synapse

Several teachers expressed interest in a common assessment form we use at my school. My school has grades 7-9 and several students often struggle with Science Processes and Skills. My science teaching team decided to come up with a fun way to review these processes and skills. This is done in a bi-weekly quiz we call "Are You Smarter than a 7th Grader?"

I've attached two different examples of our quiz. The Smarter.pdf was originally shown as a PowerPoint presentation for students to focus on one question at a time. The Smarter_2.pdf was a printed handout quiz. Note that part of our focus is to help students see questions and be able to respond in different ways. The quizzes, however, are meant to take only a short amount of class time.

Students were very excited to have class data posted to compare and see how they scored compared to others. It became VERY competitive! Sometimes a "rematch" was requested - students were reminded they would be able to try and beat the scores in two weeks. I'm sharing one chart that was really fun ... the 7th grade students scored higher (or tied) each period they were quizzed!
