"I am and I'm interested. I know it's hectic now that school has started, but I could find a time to come and get some. And I really appreciate the idea. I've avoided this bug in the past, but I'm willing to give anything a shot!"

Stacy Baker replied to Terri A. Grosso's discussion The Best Classroom Bugs in the group Zoology
"The babies are quite fast and gross me out a little because they seem more roach-like. That sounds funny. It's just that my perception of roaches is that they run really fast. Baby hissers are fast, but the adults are quite slow. I think…"

Terri A. Grosso replied to Terri A. Grosso's discussion The Best Classroom Bugs in the group Zoology
"They sound great! I'll admit that I've avoided them because of the whole roach thing. Are your students a little "hesitant"? Although I've found that they tend to get over that pretty quickly. I would definitely be…"

Stacy Baker replied to Terri A. Grosso's discussion The Best Classroom Bugs in the group Zoology
"I have Madagascar hissing cockroaches. If you keep your males & females separate and then put two males & one female in a cage together, the two males will exhibit pretty hilarious wrestling behaviors in their attempt to impress the female.…"

The Best Classroom Bugs

Which are the best (live) invertebrates for a high school classroom? I teach a course called "Bugs and Worms" which is animal behavior/invertebrate zoology in an inquiry-based high school. I think that I've gotten into a bit of a rut with the animals that I use (mostly daphnia, planaria, porcellio (sow bugs) and a few others. Basically I look for animals that are easy to care for (and can be left over the winter holidays), don't move too fast, and exhibit observable behavior. An example of an…See More

Terri A. Grosso replied to Erin Nash's discussion Zoology: Let's Start a Conversation in the group Zoology
"I know I'm late to the discussion, but I just joined! I don't teach Zoology (invertebrate) every semester, but I will be this fall. I call the class "Bugs and Worms". We have a very small school so there are 9 - 12 graders in…"

A group for those interested in the study of the animal kingdom. Currently, this group encompasses both Vertebrate and Invertebrate Zoology; however, it could branch into 2 separate groups later if desired.

"Hi! The Bugs and Worms class is fun to teach. We used to do bigger animals, but they are a pain to deal with over holidays. I stick with relatively simple-to-care-for invertebrates. Your Topics in Biology class sounds great. Where do they get ideas…"

Terri A. Grosso commented on Glen Westbroek's blog post What will you do differently with students next year?
"It's exciting to see the things that people are planning around. This was a great post! My school has only recently given us access to moodle, a CMS. Last year I mostly used it just for posting and accepting homework assignments. I hope this…"

My job title/titles:
Science and Computer Programming teacher at an alternative, inquiry-based public high school in New York City.
Favorite course I currently teach & why:
Bug and Worms - It's a hands-on invertebrate zoology course. It is very driven by student interests and they tend to take a great deal of ownership of the course. They are cute when they work with the animals.
Interests (away from work):
My 4-year-old twins, my DH, computer science, e-learning, crochet/knitting/tatting/other needlework and crafts.

Some are topics that are in the news like last yr H1N1 was of interest and MRSA Staph the year before. I also have things I want them to know about like emerging diseases beginning with the bio behind The Hot Zone which mostly took place not too far from us in Reston VA. They do a group project related to that. We also examine environmental conservation using UNESCO World Heritage sites as our foundation (a indiv project). And we look at ethical considerations behind genetic tech. But my favorite part is the individual article research blogs that they do and present for discussion in a Socratic seminar style. These are all things that they are interested in and it is easy to do b/c it is setup on a class Ning. Some really cool stuff. For example, one student had surgery and couldn't be there for six weeks so he blogged about his surgery, posted related videos and info, chatted online to the class, etc. (Skype wouldn't work at school) And his classmates could comment back and ask questions, and show support. He educated his peers about his experience. So cool. I love it and this year I will have two sections in the spring instead of one.
