Teach Marinie Bio Instead of Bio!

Here in Los Angeles, a bunch of high school teachers came to me and basically said, 'we want to teach marine biology instead of biology, so that the kids don't have to wait until 12th grade to take i…

Hi Debra, I guess you've already started this, but if this is helpful at all, please feel free to use it. And let me know if it is helpful because we are looking for feedback and comments for our funders about our various projects. Thanks. http://ww…

Thanks, Debra... That makes 4 of us in the COSEE-West group now! I hope a few others will join. Even just a few of us together could be pretty helpful.

So I’m actually trained as a scientist, not an educator. Honestly, I had to look up “constructivist” – I did find that I more or less knew and understood what it was, though. : P (Often my problem is that I don’t know the names for a lot of these ed…

I've just started using Diigo. I'll investigate how to share on del.icio.us... but any help would be appreciated as I don't use del.icio.us... at the moment. I have created a Diigo group called "COSEE-West" though... folks with Diigo accounts that…

I'm not sure if the directions say, but you can slowly switch the night/day cycle of the dinos by keeping a light on them at night and keeping them in the dark during the day (cupboard with light on a timer). Then during class they will glow more/be…

My job title/titles:
co-Director of COSEE-West, UCLA
Favorite course I currently teach & why:
I don't teach a course... I teach teacher workshops on various themes, anything we can remotely or directly tie into the ocean.

I feel the blog I listed may need some explanation. I have been keeping different blogs for different trips I've taken, so it is more like diary/journal entries online. The one list is a WHOI/National Geographic/NOAA funded cruise to the Celebes Sea to look for new life in the deep sea. I was fortunately able to go and help out with some of the science. There was lots of publicity, so you might have heard something about it. I haven't finished entering all of my daily entries yet.
Here is the official NOAA Ocean Explorer blog that everyone contributed to for that trip: http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/07philippines/welcome.html

I also have a blog about a vacation trip to Viet nam for 3 weeks (which I still need to finish typing in the entries, but about half to 2/3rd of them are online) and I started one about a dive trip to the andaman islands which may or may not ever be finish if I can't find my notes!
Interests (away from work):
scuba, swimming, hiking, farmers markets, fish hatcheries, invasive species, new species, marine protected areas, marine biology, ecology, evolution, crochet, sewing, reading, ocean sciences, music (listening and playing), TED talks, Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me, Science Friday... (oh, wait "away from work" interests, work interests and non-work interests are sometimes hard to tease apart. I feel lucky that that is the case.), Bill Nye the science guy, Alton Brown, Mythbusters, The Big Bang Theory

Nahhh... pleasantly-whelmed is more like it. I love how folks here get busy otherwise... take care of business, and then return in spare time to comment, question, and share. Asynchronous communication at its best.

It was great to meet you at the conference. Your presentation was packed (especially for the last presentation on Saturday). Thanks for sharing on The Synapse.
PS. You should start a discussion about teaching Marine Bio as Bio 1 and link to this really cool website I found with an entire year's curriculum ;)
