My job title/titles:
Biology/Zoology Instructor
Science Department Chair
Assistant Cross Country Coach
Favorite course I currently teach & why:
My favorite class I currently teach would have to be Zoology. It is so wonderful to help kids discover things about the animal kingdom they never had even imagined before. Most of them have knowledge about large vertebrates, and it is exciting to open their eyes to the diversity of the animal kingdom.
Interests (away from work):
My family (I have an absolutely amazing husband and two beautiful daughters).
Reading.
Running/Exercising.
Being outdoors (fishing,gardening, camping, admiring).
Learning.

Softening the Walls of a Science Classroom

If you have never watched Creature Cast, you should. Creature Cast is fun, and fun is good.

Seriously, if you haven’t noticed it, and you teach in the field of Biological sciences, you should notice it, if not for the content,…

Reading Into Genetics

As a Biology teacher with dual certification in Communication Arts, I feel thrilled when the two disciplines can be creatively interwoven. When my high school implemented a building wide read-aloud model two years ago (we require a minimum five minute teacher led… Continue

You don't understand..."science geek" is a term of endearment in my world :-) BTW, congrats on the new addition. The pics from the slideshow are awesome. Very happy for you guys.

Thanks for the comments and the welcome.
I am fortunate to have a stream, a woodlands and an old strip mine within walking distance of my building. We spend time doing data collection of abiotic factors as well as collection and identification of biotic factors. We also spend time trying to put together the interactions between all of the factors we observe. When weather does not let us out, we work a lot on environmental responsibility. Coming from a coal minig area, we have some great background from which to dig up issues and ideas. For me it is a great opportunity every day!

Why thank you. I'm really excited about this and have lots to share. I just need to find the time! Your hubby sent me the link last night and as soon as I brought it up my hs-Sr had a "crisis" with an AP Physics project...suddenly my night drastically changed!
I have so much to learn from you all.

Thanks Erin, for the welcome. Cokato is west of Minneapolis about 50 miles. I'm originally from Mason City, just wanted to live among the lakes.

Hi Erin, Yes, it is volunteer work. I divide my time during the summer between a wildlife rehabilitation center and a rescue center for rabbits.

Hi Erin! Thank you for your welcoming statement. I love your pictures! It looks like your kids do much lab work! Awesome!

As for the meal in my picture, that's Paella Valenciana. I make it every year at a reunion of friends at the beach (Outerbanks of NC).

I have been teaching at EC for 28 years (37 years total) and have six classes. 8th earth science, 9th physical science, 10th biology, 11-12th advanced biology, 11-12th chemistry, and 12th physics. I know a lot of people think six preps is a lot and it probably would be for a beginning teacher. But when you have taught as long as I have (a master teacher in SD) it isn't so bad. It also has its advantages, you don't have to remember to cover the same things in each section of every class like those teaching 4-5 sections of the same class. And the classes are small varying from 7 in physics to 16 in 8th grade earth science.
