The Synapse

I think it'll be easier to respond if this is a discussion :)

Clint Walters just learned that he is teaching AP Bio this semester. (No pressure, there, Clint!) He needs ideas and activities. I asked him what topics he needs to cover, and he said,
"I am finishing Genetics / DNA. I still need to cover biotechnology, evolution, and specifics regarding the kingdoms. Also, how long should
I devote to reviewing for the exam May 10? Any suggestions for this
would be appreciated also."

So... anyone have thoughts, suggestions, or activities to upload for Clint? He already knows about the "official" AP labs.

go to www.biologyjunction.com. She has great resources for curriculum and labs. I think it would be a great help. http://www.explorebiology.com/apbiology/ is also a great website with wonderful resources. Good luck!!
Hi Clint,

I always cover the specifics of the kingdoms as an out of class project. Give the kids a freshman bio book and have them take notes (plus wikipedia) on a few of the phyla. Then have them meet and share notes (night time study session, on a wiki, in class mini presentations). The material is easy enough for the kids to learn on their own and teach each other.

This will allow you to focus on Biotech (3-4 weeks) and Evolution (4-5 weeks)

For Biotech, I like to have groups each study one of the "big DNA experiments" and have them write up/record an explanation of the experiment and what it proved.

I usually budget 2-3 weeks for exam review. Specifically doing old ap exam prompts in class, having the kids grade each other's, and discussing how to write the essay.

Attached is a guide to essay writing someone gave me long ago.
